The Schoharie Free Library has about 250 items relating to local history and genealogy in our small collection. None of these materials circulate, but may be read here. A copier is available at the cost of 25 cents per page. We do house materials relating to Don Cameron Shafer, the local author of “Smokefires in Schoharie.” We have several private files of brief works annotated by the author, manuscripts, and original periodicals containing some of his published articles.
The major holder of local historical information is the Schoharie County Historical Society. The Society is housed at the Old Stone Fort Museum Complex, at the north end of the Village. The library there has a large collection, which was begun in 1889. It contains approximately 5,000 bound volumes including atlases, cemetery, church, court and war records, family Bibles, area newspapers, county directories, and regional genealogies and histories. It also has 10,000 manuscripts, including 18th and 19th century maps, land grants, indentures, wills, scrapbooks and ledgers. There are also approximately 15,000 photographs and postcards.
Several miles in the opposite direction is the Middleburgh Free Library. It has a History-Genealogy Room, which opened in 1999. There is a ten-drawer master name file arranged alphabetically with thousands of names and references to information found about those persons in the Room. They have the 1855 Middleburgh census on file cards, the “Book of Names” by MacWethy, a few family Bibles, Cady’s records as well as those of the census, churches, cemeteries, and military records of the four wars. Also at least 150 family genealogies printed in hard or soft cover form (or simply in manila folders when information is limited).
